Four transportation studies are currently in progress within the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Metropolitan Planning Organization (HRMPO) boundaries, each addressing unique mobility challenges in the region.
The HRMPO-led Port Republic Road, Peach Grove, and Neff Avenue study, launched in October 2024, addresses the region’s most high crash intersection. With 88 crashes reported between 2019-2023, this area has emerged as a critical safety priority, with the study team developing multiple scenarios to accommodate projected growth through 2045 while enhancing safety for all users.
Along the city’s western corridor, the City of Harrisonburg’s Chicago Avenue and Waterman Drive study examines both transportation and stormwater infrastructure needs. This comprehensive analysis is collecting community input through November 12, 2024, will evaluate multiple alternatives for people walking and biking while addressing existing stormwater challenges along these vital corridors.
The VDOT STARS Vine Street corridor study, spanning from North Main Street to East Market Street, will address growing congestion and safety concerns along this important residential arterial. With three high-priority safety improvement intersections and approximately 8,000 daily vehicles, the study will examine solutions including roundabout options and potential street extensions while considering future development impacts on this evolving corridor.
In Rockingham County, the Route 765/Gravels Road Alternative Routing Analysis is exploring options for a new connector roadway to address industrial truck traffic concerns between Kratzer Road and North Valley Pike. The study will evaluate how a potential bypass could redirect heavy vehicles away from residential areas while measuring impacts on regional travel patterns and efficiency.
These studies aim to provide actionable recommendations for future transportation improvements that will enhance safety and mobility throughout the greater Harrisonburg – Rockingham Metropolitan area.
